Ricky Ponting warns India of tough ODI series

Mumbai: Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting on Tuesday sounded the warning bells for India, saying that his team were in good form and would be hard to beat, even in the sub-continental conditions.

Addressing a press conference, Ponting said that Australia had a strong chance of winning the seven-match ODI series against MS Dhoni’s men. The mood in the Oz dressing room was upbeat and confident and the young lot was eager to prove their mettle on the field.

"India is a very good and strong one-day team and were not underestimating them. We are the number one and two teams in the world and all points to an entertaining and good contest over the next few weeks," Ponting said at his first media conference.

"We have always enjoyed playing in India and against India. Our rivalry over the last few years has been growing and its good for the world game," he said.

Pointing out Australia`s splendid run in the 50-over game over the last few months, that included a 6-1 thrashing of hosts England and a successful defence of their ICC Champions Trophy crown, Ponting was optimistic of carrying forward good form in India as well.

"We have played some excellent one-day cricket over the last few months beginning from the England tour and in the Champions Trophy. We need to keep improving and need to be at our best right through the series," he said.

Never the one to shy away from mind games, Ponting said that his team was the top ODI team in the world and Indians would have to dig deep to win against them. “Our record in the subcontinent has been good. We have played well constantly over the last few months”, he said.

India on the other hand, have been rickety in their performances in the past few months and had failed to reach the second leg of the Champions Trophy last month.

I’m peak of my career: Trescothick

"I always enjoyed playing in India," said Marcus Trescothick, the former England opener. The left-hander is keen to beat his India demons this time after his unpleasant tour last time when he was with the England team.
"It is a big step forward. I’m not saying everything is sorted. I knew it would be a great challenge to me. I think I would make big steps in this big tournament," said Trescothick who is here as a member of Somerset team  that will play in the inaugural Champions League
Twenty20 tournament.

Named player of the year by the Professional Cricketers Association’s Player of the year, Trescothick said it was personally good year for him. "It was an ideal year. I had my best season at 33. I’m peak of my career, who knows.  I’m not saying I will be back in England team. But I am confident for this tournament," he said.

Trescothick said he did not have any aspiration to go next level. "I have stayed away from England."

On his motivation that keeps him going, he said: " I grew up in cricket since I was a kid. Score runs as many as I could. That drive and ambition has never left me. That will keep me driving till I think it is enough. I would like to continue to the best player and score many runs. That gives me the kick every day when I get up in the morning."

At the same time, he said he can’t guarantee if he continues to play. "This was one of the joy run, see how well I can do and can I perform. I can't say yes or no. I have to compete against best players."

The opener said the introduction of T20 has taken the game forward. "We don’t know what is it going to be four or five years from now. Hopefully,

everybody moves with it. It is a great spectacle event. T20 is a big thing for future."

Trescothick felt one-day cricket was too long. "My theory of  one-day cricket is the length and the time. People enjoy T20 as it is fast. There is a lot of action. Test cricket will continue because that is where there is challenge to do. It is pinnacle of cricket. May be T20 has changed Test cricket slightly. People want three hour game. May be the 40 over game would be exciting. Since T20 is short and 50 over is too long, the 40 over would give the balance.

IPL, according to Trescothick, is a shop window for young players. "If any one of the guys gets a hundred or five-for why not? People are going to pay

them and it is a great opportunity for a young player."

He felt Sachin Tendulkar was amazing. "We look at his records, stats. We are all amazed and say how long he is going to play, how many games he is

going to play, how many hundreds he will get. But he continues to be the best and that makes him a model professional."

Australia won Champions Trophy 2009

The youngsters won it for us - Ponting

Australian players pose with the trophy, Australia v New Zealand, ICC Champions Trophy final, Centurion, October 5, 2009
Ricky Ponting has attributed Australia's Champions Trophy success to the efforts of youngsters in his team, especially their performance in an occasionally tense final.
"We have gone through some ups and downs in the last 18 months. A number of great players have left and we brought in a lot of young, fresh players. It was great to see some of them stand up and deliver," Ponting said after Australia's six-wicket win over New Zealand that gave them their second Champions Trophy title.
Australia's bowling performance in the final was led by Nathan Hauritz, who grabbed 3 for 37, including the well-set Martin Guptill for 40. Later, in their chase of 201, Australia were in trouble at 6 for 2 but Shane Watson and Cameron White added 128 to put them in control. "Two young guys at the crease at 6 for 2, it doesn't get any tougher and they did a great job," Ponting said.

Australia came in to the tournament as favourites along with South Africa, fresh from the success of a 6-1 ODI humiliation of England. They beat West Indies in a tough contest in Johannesburg, were dominant against India in a washed-out game and edged Pakistan in a two-wicket win in Centurion. They were comprehensive winners in the semi-final against England, Ponting and Shane Watson hammering centuries in a nine-wicket win.
"In the ODI series in England after the Ashes, we did well there to put ourselves in a position where we can give this tournament a little bit of a shake," Ponting said. "We've played some great cricket over the last couple of weeks here."
The Champions Trophy also brought personal success for Ponting, as he emerged the highest run-getter with 288 at 72 in four games. He was honoured with a golden bat for that feat, and followed it up with the Man-of-the-Series award, ahead of Watson, who finished the tournament with back-to-back centuries.
"We needed discipline today, and we knew that if I was around till the 40th over, we had a chance," Watson, who was Man of the Match, said after his innings of 105. "It was set up with Ricky's help in the semi-finals to get me through, and he missed out today, but it was time for another to step up.
"The wicket today was a little slower than the other night but Kyle Mills and Shane Bond bowled beautifully straight up until me and White had a good partnership."

New Zealand vs Pakistan: October 03, 2009 II Semi Finals Champions Trophy 2009 Preview. The two teams last met in World Twenty20 at the Oval and Pakistan won with 6+ overs to spare (and read this in a 20-20 match). It will be another similar repeat by Pakistan. They have started as a rusty team but picked up form at the right time.
Pakistan cricket fans are all excited to see their team zoom past the semi finals and majority of betters are favouriting Pakistan in this match. Younis Khan too expressed very beginning of the tournament that his team will be there in the finals and take the Trophy to home. They are inching close to the captain’s words.
Still, we cannot underestimate New Zealand, they ended their fans’ frustration playing great game against the Sri Lanka. They have posted a mammoth total on board well contributed by Jesse Ryder, Guptill and Vettori. Sri Lanka faltered and could make 277 in reply.
Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill are the top scorers so far in the tournament and they are sure to give some tough time to Pakistan bowlers; Aamer will need to have special balls for these batsmen who have no respect for any bowler. I still believe New Zealand will spring a surprising result and might shock Pakistan.

India beat West Indies but exit ICC Champions Trophy

Mahendra Singh Dhoni of India (2nd Left) is congratulated by team mates after taking the wicket of Travis Dowlin during The ICC Champions Trophy Group A Match between India and West Indies at Wanderers Stadium on September 30, 2009 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Johannesburg: Praveen Kumar and Ashish Nehra shared six wickets as India beat West Indies by seven wickets but still went out of the ICC Champions Trophy on Wednesday.

India failed to advance to the semi-finals from Group A after Australia beat Pakistan earlier in the day.
India end the group stage with a single victory while West Indies lost all three of their matches in the competition.
India skittled West Indies for 129 in 36 overs, with seamer Kumar capturing three for 22 and left-arm swing bowler Nehra taking three for 31.
In reply, India cruised to 130 for three off 32.1 overs thanks to a second-wicket stand of 92 from Disnesh Kartik (34) and Virat Kohli who finished unbeaten on 79.
After winning the toss and electing to field, India's opening bowlers Kumar and Nehra both swung the new ball prodigiously as West Indies slumped to 31 for four inside 11 overs.
Kumar, in particular, was impressive as his opening spell yielded the superb figures of two for 15 off eight overs.
In an unusual move India's captain and wicketkeeper, MS DHONI gave up his gloves to bowl the 17th over of the innings.
Dhoni's decision proved to be an inspired one as the medium-pacer bowled Travis Dowlin to claim his first wicket in one-day international cricket.
After their top-order had been quickly dismantled the West Indies continued to struggle with the bat.
India's run-chase got off to a rocky start as they slipped to 12 for two before Karthik and Kohli steadied the innings.
